Keys' Response to Publication of AG'S Advice and Call for Tories and Lib Dems to Support Him
KEYS FOR SEDGEFIELD CAMPAIGN
PRESS INFORMATION - IMMEDIATE
Speaking this morning 28 April 2005 at Keys for Sedgefield Campaign head quarters in the constituency, Reg Keys said:
'The gap between the Attorney General's advice of 7 March 2003, despite publication of the full thirteen pages this morning, and the 'summary' of 17 March on which both Cabinet and Parliament agreed to go to war, remains politically unbridgeable. I can still envisage no explanation which would satisfy those who voted for the war on the assurances of the AG's 'summary'.
'Whatever the Prime Minister and his representatives say about conditions changing between those two dates, he must realise that he has a credibility problem on the political and the individual level which would take a miracle to resolve.
'I believe he can only sustain his honour and integrity by resigning as Prime Minister now, and standing against me on May 5th as an ordinary man.'
Keys' agent Bob Clay said:
'Reg Keys is beyond doubt the only person who can beat Blair in Sedgefield. Our canvass returns show them way out in front of the field, with no other candidate coming anywhere near. We have therefore called on the Conservative and Liberal Democrat leadership to call on their voters to support Keys, as it is too late to pull their candidates out.
'Reg Keys is Britain's only constitutional device for removing from office a Prime Minister who has consistently evaded accountability for a taking Britain into an illegal war.'
Martin Bell said:
'The PM's position is untenable; the people of Sedgefield, to whom he is directly accountable, have it in their power to bring about democratic regime change. I appeal to the leadership of the Conservative and Liberal Democratic parties to urge their supporters to vote for Reg Keys as the only credible alternative to Tony Blair.'
